Dental Exams

Regular dental checkups are an essential element of oral health maintenance, but many people neglect to schedule them. We encourage our patients to take their health seriously and visit us twice a year for an examination. Learn more about what to expect at a general dentistry checkup and why they are so important by visiting our dental exams page.

Periodontal Disease

Gum disease is the most common infection among adults, and many are not even aware that they have it. Despite its often mild symptoms, a periodontal infection can have serious health consequences for the teeth as well as the rest of the body. To learn more about the causes, effects, prevention, and treatment of this condition, visit our gum disease treatment page.

Root Canals

When tooth damage advances to the point that the pulp of the tooth becomes infected and dies, root canal therapy may the only way to prevent it from being lost. Discover how this general dentistry procedure is performed by visiting our root canal therapy page.

Tooth Extraction

Although we generally do whatever is necessary to avoid removing a tooth, it is sometimes necessary. A badly cracked or decayed tooth or a wisdom tooth that is posing problems for the rest of the mouth is best removed to prevent further damage. At our Center City, Philadelphia general dentistry practice, we do everything we can to make our patients as comfortable as possible during and after a tooth extraction. Following aftercare instructions faithfully will reduce the likelihood of complication and speed recovery. Once the gum is healed, we will discuss the tooth replacement options available, including dental implants and bridges, and help patients determine what is right for them.

TMJ Treatment

The temporomandibular joint is what allows the lower jaw to move during such activities as speaking and chewing. This is a complex area of the body that can suffer irritation, inflammation, stress, or damage from a wide range of causes. Temporomandibular joint disorder, often referred to as TMJ or TMD, can have symptoms ranging from clicking or popping noises during jaw movement to pain or tenderness around the jaw, face, neck, or ears.

Treatment for TMJ disorders is most effective if the cause of the problem can be identified. Dr. Barry Dubin has undergone special training beyond his general dentistry education that allows him to diagnose and treat this condition. Typically, stress-reducing exercises and devices, alone or in combination with muscle relaxing medication, are effective in reducing pain and returning the joint to normal function. Contact our Center City practice in downtown Philadelphia for a general dentistry exam or a TMJ assessment.

Tooth-colored Fillings

Unlike traditional metal fillings, tooth-colored, or composite, fillings are virtually invisible to the eye. Using a material similar to that used for dental bonding, we can fill cavities and protect a tooth from further damage while leaving no visible evidence that a restoration was made. At JFK Dental Care, we can also replace old metal fillings with tooth-colored ones, enhancing the aesthetics of our patients’ smiles while maintaining the health and stability of their teeth. Composite fillings also adhere more easily to teeth, making them easier to place and less likely to come loose. Visit our tooth-colored fillings page to learn more.

Sealants

Along with good at-home care and regular dental checkups, sealants can help prevent tooth decay and the formation of cavities. Made of a sturdy plastic resin, sealants are usually applied to the back teeth, preventing food debris and plaque from lodging in tight crevices that are difficult to reach while brushing. The process is fast and simple, allowing sealants to be applied during a general dentistry exam, if appropriate. They are most commonly used on children to prevent damage to teeth early in life, but sealants may be used on patients of all ages.

Dental Emergencies

Dental emergencies require the same prompt attention as other medical emergencies to avoid permanent damage or tooth loss. Patients who have broken or knocked out a tooth, damaged a restoration, or are suffering from serious tooth, gum, or jaw pain should call our office immediately. If the emergency takes place during regular office hours, we can usually see the patient that day. If the emergency happens outside of normal business hours, the recording on our voice mail will instruct the patient about what to do next.

Dentistry without Anxiety

We know that many people suffer from dental anxiety and dental phobia. These conditions keep people from getting the dental care that is vital to their teeth as well as their overall health. At JFK Dental Care, we offer sedation dentistry, allowing patients to undergo everything from routine checkups to restorative dentistry procedures without anxiety or discomfort.
