Providing Dental Bridge and Porcelain Crown Services in Philadelphia

At JFK Dental Care, we provide a full range of dentistry services, from simple cosmetic treatments to complex restorative procedures. Because each patient is unique, we develop personalized treatments for everyone we care for; sometimes, the best option is a relatively new, technologically advanced technique, whereas other cases may require a more traditional, tried and true method. A dental crown or a dental bridge, both available at our Philadelphia practice, can be effective restorative options for a number of common dental conditions.

Dental Bridges

A traditional dental bridge is an artificial tooth with a dental crown mounted on each side. It is used to replace a missing tooth by attaching the crowns to the natural teeth on either side of the empty space. A cantilever bridge is a special type of bridge that is used when there are natural teeth on only one side of the missing tooth. By replacing missing teeth, dental bridges can make speaking and eating easier, while preventing surrounding teeth from shifting out of place.

The Dental Bridge Placement Procedure

Before a dental bridge is placed, the teeth adjacent to the missing tooth must be prepared. This involves removing enough material from each tooth to make room for a dental crown. After preparation is complete, an impression is taken to custom-create the bridge so that it fits well and blends in with the surrounding teeth. A temporary bridge is used to protect the teeth and gums while the permanent bridge is being produced.

Once the teeth have been prepared to accept a dental crown and the completed bridge is delivered to our Philadelphia office, the patient returns for final placement. The temporary bridge is removed, and the permanent replacement is checked for fit. If no adjustments are needed, the crowns are affixed to the prepared teeth with durable dental cement.

Dental Crowns

In addition to anchoring a dental bridge in place, crowns have a number of valuable applications. When the natural crown of a tooth has been damaged by decay and is in danger of breaking apart, but the root is still healthy and intact, a dental crown can be used to hold the tooth together, protect it, and add strength. A crown can also cover a tooth that is misshapen or severely discolored, or be placed over a dental implant anchor to provide a functional, natural-looking tooth replacement.

The Dental Crown Placement Procedure

The exact procedure used to place a dental crown depends on its desired purpose. Generally, however, it begins with the removal of a certain amount of enamel to prepare the tooth for the placement of the crown. Once the tooth is ready, an impression is made so that the dental crown can be made to fit the tooth precisely. In the meantime, the patient is given a temporary crown until the permanent one can be placed during a subsequent visit. When the crown is ready, it is checked for fit and color and affixed to the tooth with dental cement.
